Observation details
*Rare; represents the ~18th NJ record and ~17th county record, and follows pattern of occurrence in the dunes at Cape May Point. Initially heard in dune-top pines about 25 yards east of Coral dune crossover, giving typical calls with high/squeaky first note followed by lower/harsher series, sometimes abbreviated. Eventually seen from street in dead pine; decent views of small nuthatch with brown crown, blue-gray upperparts, tan/gray underparts. it spent a few minutes along Harvard before flying back toward Coral x Lincoln. We then were unable to find it as it went quiet after this and apparently returned to the dunes; a few minutes later I saw it lifting up and departing high to the west along Harvard Ave. Photos.
