Observation details
One singing but unable to get recording, one silent and photographed, a third recorded doing 'whit' calls repeatedly. All 3 in different spots but same habitat: post-burn Gambel's oak shrubland with scattered ponderosa pine on south facing slope at about 8500 feet elevation. Known location in typical breeding habitat for 3rd year in a row here. Whit calls differ from Hammond's. Song similar to Hammonds, but quality a bit more thin, less burry and, as on recorded songs from birds at nearby sites earlier this morning, the usual second phrase of the song different than anything in Hammond's song. First and most common song phrase a rather clear 'sebit'. Second phrase clear, not burry, 2 notes very close together with the second one strongly and rapidly upslurred. 3rd song phrase burry, downslurred, not unlike Hammond's song phrases. Hammond's present and also singing some along same trail but in dense mixed forest in the bottom of the canyon. Wrong habitat and elevation for Gray Flycatcher at this season, and it's song is much burrier for the most part and less varied than these birds. Whit call differs slightly from Gray in that it is less sharp, 'whit' rather than 'pit'.
