Observation details
Awesome find earlier today by the Brookline Birding Club. Distant but decent views from the path parallel to Webber Hill Road/Rt. 99, with the bird about halfway between the path and the road and about a quarter mile to the west of the dirt road that bisects this northern portion of the plains. I first noticed and identified this bird (as a shrike anyway) in flight based on its high-contrast plumage and distinctive wing pattern. When seen perched, obviously a shrike based on large head size, bold black and white and gray patterning, and distinctly hooked bill. Occurrence in late June in and of itself better suggestive of LOSH over NSHR. Other features consistent with LOSH over NSHR include broader black mask completely surrounding the eye and not really narrowing around the lores, as well as shorter, stubbier bill. State bird!
