Observation details
First bird heard singing and then seen perched on snag in same spot where singing in late May, in an opening on south facing slope within aspen forest with scattered taller aspen and many saplings, grass and some shrubs. Classic breeding habitat, not a dense forest and mostly small deciduous trees and shrubs rather than conifers. Second bird and third birds also singing (second one recorded) in similar habitat, one of them apparently on same territory as where heard singing in late May. Quality of song more thin than Hammond's overall, with second phrase unlike any Hammond's phrase: 2 thin clear notes very close together with second one strongly upslurred (latter phrase reminiscent of Cordilleran Flycatcher call). Drab, rather disheveled, olive gray empids with pale yellowish belly, dull whitish wingbars and eyering. Each with slight variation in shape, but shorter primary projection than Hammond's thus creating long-tailed look in comparison. Bill perhaps averaging longer than Hammond's. Head shape more toward round. All 3 photographed and perched in either dead aspen or in dead branches of tall shrubs. Song was the most clearly diagnostic feature, but shape and habitat also consistent with ID of Dusky rather than the very similar and more common in this area Hammond's.
