Observation details
LIFER - This was the first time for us to identify this bird. We originally posted these photos of this small bird as a wrentit. It was collecting nesting material from what looked like an elderberry. However, our photos were not accepted by the eBird monitors as a wrentit. Photos of parts of the bird show a white eye, dark unmarked upper parts, and lighter chest, black feet and small black beak. We had believed this was a wrentit. We had seen on eBird that a wrentit had been reported by another eBirder very recently to the east of this location at Ming Lake but eBird was flagging this observation in this area as "unreported." With the information that our identification of it as a wrentit was not accepted, we discovered with further study that a bushtit can also have bright eyes like this. We did get Merlin sound app recordings for bushtits at this location and had reported the presence of two of them here so we think these photos must show a bushtit. This is our first trip to the western US since we started birding so we are unfamiliar with the western birds. Let us know if we are still incorrect. The first photo is the same as the second one but has been rotated 90°.
