Observation details
It was small, about the size of a female grackle -I say this because the grackle was close to it (on the dry ground/shore) and the grebe was hanging around near the shore in the grass that is growing out of the water. It’s top of head, neck and back we’re like a charcoal color, it’s throat and neck were all white, it’s beak was yellow orange, short like a Pied-Billed. No other stripes or other coloration. As previously stated it is small, about half the size of the immature wood ducks, another comparison since they were in the same pond. The immature wood ducks are getting close to the size of the adults. Most of the time this little grebe hung out near the shoreline within the first 18 inches of the shore, where the grass was growing. Then later on I saw it in the middle of the pond diving underwater. I looked at the Peterson's field guide and also Merlin ap/guide and I cannot find a grebe that looks like the one I observed. I also looked at every species of Grebe on Cornell. I used my cell phone to take some pictures, however it’s hard to see the bird well in my pictures. There was a woman there who had a Camera with a large lense, I spoke with her and she got pictures of the grebe, hopefully she will post them on eBird. She says she checks Ebird but is not active on eBird (I am paraphrasing her words), however I hope she posts the pictures. She took very good close-up pictures of this bird!
