Observation details
*Rare. An exceptional record for Anchorage! Originally found by Aaron Bowman on the muddy flats off the Campbell Creek Estuary Natural Area; later flushed east to this location at Carr-Gottstein Park. On the grassy flats associating with a flock of Canada Geese and viewed from the high bluff. Medium-sized goose with dark face, dark brown upper parts, black bill with orange tip, and orange legs. Aaron B.'s initial assessment at a distance was for Taiga Bean-Goose, but closer inspection reveals a Bean-Goose sp. with a more prominent grin patch, shorter neck, and more compact/shorter bill. This bird did *not* have the long gently sloped head-to-bill shape of a Taiga; the head-to-bill junction was more discontinuous in shape with an abrupt change of angle from where the forehead meets bill. As per Thede Tobish, "Eastern Taiga's are the largest ssp and should be clearly bulkier than adjacent parvipes sp. Canada Geese." Final assessment = Tundra Bean-Goose.
