Observation details
Male of White-spotted variant ( sbsp. cyanecula) in breeding plumage seenwell with Alan Daniells, Anne Crowe, Sue Horton and several other observers from Shepherds hut on Middle Hope. Watched over a 20 minute period perched on the sign post, in the reeds and on various twigs. Was singing for some of this time. Boldly patterned chat with white supercilium and darker eye stripe and lores, ultramarine blue throat and upper breast ( size of white patch varying with the bird's stance) over black then robin-red crescent across the centre, contrasting with white lower breast and belly. Upper parts and wings like a grey-brown Robin and seen perched from behind, revealed a lovely tail pattern, the robin-red sides contrasting with the dark tip and duller brown centre. Quite mobile as it staked out its territorry between song perches. Song of 7- 10 phrases seemed quite scratchy and chat-like but more melodic and speeding up towards the end. Photo-scoped by Alan Daniells.
