Observation details
Having observed four fledglings, in a grassy area next to the parking lot, just the previous day, I was saddened to see that one was missing this morning and that the family had moved from the grass to the parking lot. I stayed in my car, a good distance away and knew they were comfortable in my being there because they actually moved in closer to the car after I sat there for a while. Later and much to my astonishment the three fledglings, encouraged by the mother, attempted to cross the four sets of train tracks (and three hot rails) in an effort to get to the Hudson river. The Sunday morning train schedule allowed for fewer trains passing through but it was still hard to watch. After moving to a new location, I lost sight of two of the fledglings and feared the worst when the mother stopped vocalizing. But following up exactly one week later, I was so very happy to observe the entire family of five at the Landing "beach" on the Hudson river. The three fledglings all looked exactly one week older. I guess the mother knew what she was doing after all!
