Observation details
Continuing. Photos. From 8 am to 12 pm, working the new pond at the south construction entrance (inside of the canal) and the golf course pond just to the south. This individual strikes me as a bird of the year, w apparent retained juvenal primaries (note the pointed tipped, worn outers), duller, dark-tipped bill, dark secondaries, and only just starting primary molt (looks like p1 dropped). The primaries also look like they’re of the same generation. Further feedback from Peter Pyle and Steve Howell re age of this bird: From Peter: “These breed in May-Jun and Oct-Dec in north part of their South American range according to BOW. So fairly typical molt timing for thePB2 [second pre-basic molt] of a chick from the May-Jun population. The secondaries are uniform and blackish, indicating worn feathers. The adult [Brevard Co] is a bit father along in molt for a bird from this population but may be from the fall/winter breeding population or has been up here for a while. It's always a bit difficult to analyze molt in birds that are in the wrong hemisphere, as another factor is how recently the crossed into the opposite light regime.” From Steve “agree this bird has worn/black and retained juv pp just starting p molt but presumably having undergone some head and body molt.”
