pair sketched in field notes
Observation details
two pairs; description in notes. Seen by the whole pack of us. My notes read as quoted below, and include a field sketch that I embed here. "2 pairs seen through Questars on the far bank and adjacent pond edge of Big Lake, Murder Pt., on 27 May. A good comparison with a female Eurasian Wigeon was excellent, considering yesterday's 'wigeon walk' [a long chase for a claimed rarity that was just a female wigeon]. [sketch here] Male like sketch above -- bill black, forehead white, reddish-glossed crown & fact, greenish glossed side of head and crest. White throat & neck with a black collar. Grayish breast & sides. Gray-blue feathers above wings becoming long, sickle-shaped scapulars. Flanks white & undertail white--divided by a black bar. Larger than wigeon and chunkier. Feet dark gray. Female is amazingly reminiscent of female Eur Wigeon, (which was) available for comparison. Shape (of Falcated female) is a bit chunkier, thicker-necked, with a puffy look to nape. Size is a bit larger than wigeon. Plumage overall brownish--including belly, becoming grayish-brown on the head, with dark speckles becoming heavier towards crown and heaviest in the lores. Head plumage is mostly wigeon-like. Primaries, seen at rest, dark gray, clearly darker than rest of wing. Speculum, when visible, looks black, glossed with green, preceded by wide white bar. Undertail brown. Tail brown; outer tail feathers white. Distinguished from wigeon by thicker-necked, chunkier shape; larger size; speculum pattern; all gray bill; dark (not white) belly; brown sides & flanks (not washed with rusty) and white outer tail feathers. Bill a plain gay -- lighter than the black bill of the male. Female feet dark gray. When female flapped wings, white axillaries were seen." NOTE: the two pairs remained to 31 May, on which date I tried to photograph with slide film (now digitized).
