Observation details
imm (probably juv?); description in notes. I was washing clothes when "a very excited Gerry Maisel informed us at 1500 by radio that the White-tailed Eagle was soaring over the runway. Much excitement, then back to washing clothes." My notes read: "The eagle was an immature about the size of Bald Eagle or larger. Very broad, long wings with wingtips held nearly parallel to the body and curled slightly up. Tail and head extending about the same distance either way beyond the wings. The tail was distinctly wedge-shaped, formed of white feather centers and brown edgings -- looking white, outlined in dark. The entire plumage was a dark brown, except for conspicuous white axillaries and a white line extending out the wings (probably greater or median underwing coverts). The bill was large and looked pale, even yellow. I was impressed with the rectangular proportions of the bird, the long neck, and the wedge-shaped tail -- even more so than I had suspected. The bulging shape of the secondaries (see sketch) also are signs of immaturity."
