Observation details
Incredibly rare in Nassau, with only a handful of modern records of the species, which is scarce, localized, and likely declining in neighboring Suffolk. Found several weeks ago by Brendan Fogarty, fortuitously still sticking around in the same general area. Heard singing persistently upon my arrival, an evocative and onomatopoeic whistling series repeated incessantly with only sporadic, brief breaks. Audible from both the Ocean and Bay Parkways, closer to the latter, occasionally drowned out by the noise of passing traffic. Went quiet a few minutes before I departed. In the field, I wasn’t sure if there was more than one individual present due to the ventriloquial quality of the vocalizations, but recordings confirm my suspicions that there was indeed a second singer faintly discernible in the background. Uncertain whether this apparent territoriality is connected to a breeding attempt
