Observation details
2 chuckling from Muck Pond at 4:45 am. “Coo-coo-coo” tough to pick out from the Green Frogs, but it is distinctively much softer, faster paced, and cleaner. 2 separate locations on the pond, calling to each other. One bird was still calling when I returned at 5:40 am, and at 6 am both birds started calling together farther left on the pond, which I recorded. I waited for the mist to clear, and eventually caught one moving through the reeds at the far waters edge at the leftmost visible area from the opening to the right of the parking area. 2 more made themselves known right beside the parking area as I was scanning for the far pair (I at first misidentified their raspy “kek” calls as VIRA) and one perched right out in the open and allowed for photos. The bird on the right gave 4 raspy “kek” call series while I was at the pond, while the bird on the left gave a single “keek” as well as a “kek” series, to which the bird on the right immediately responded, and a few chuckling calls. A fifth heard from the parking lot at Bittern Lake at 5:20 am, but much more distant, likely in the marsh along Jacob’s Creek. Very vocal, both “pairs” could be heard at once. Photos and recordings to come.
