Observation details
On my way down to the river, between the trees I spotted a white bird hunting the river tern-like, puzzled on it for a minute, then dismissed it as the sun playing tricks. When I got down to the water, I heard a little girl say to her mom, “look at that bird!” We were maybe 50 ft tops from the tern, well-camouflaged on the Josephine Cr. gravel bar. Once it realized it had drawn attention, it flew to rocks in the middle of the Illinois, calling ka-deek. Watched the bird hunt the shoreline and fly back to the rocks for 10 minutes before he flew downstream and I couldn’t refind. Of course I didn’t have my camera, but I took some grungy bin shots. Tiny tern, a little smaller than a jay, w/yellow bill, yellowish legs, white forehead, black crown, and dark-tips on outer primaries.
