Observation details
Huge white bird as large as a swan with black wingtips evident when it stretched. Yellowish-orange feet. Huge pouched bill that was pinkish on the upper mandible and yellowish on the lower mandible; it did not have the protuberance on the top that breeding birds have. Very slight duskiness on neck and back indicates juvenile. Originally seen flying up the Muskingum River, where it landed behind the Corps of Engineers yard. It then drifted down to the junction with the Ohio River, where it came ashore and perched on the Ohio shore and preened for over 30 minutes before settling down to roost when the rain resumed. Bird was gone about 11:30 when I checked again.
