Observation details
Continuing bird, still favoring the area southeast of Tupelo. Made me work for it this afternoon, with the first half hour of the stakeout producing only silence and several fleeting glimpses of an appropriately-sized fluttering silhouette in the canopy. The bird eventually descended to an unobstructed perch at eye level near the head of the path that runs parallel to the Gill leading downhill to Evodia. Substantial for an Empid, fairly large-billed with a pale lower mandible, significant primary projection. Made several sallying flights in the understory before disappearing again. Heard a single explosive “pit-SEET!” song several minutes later, followed by an extended bout of sharp “peek!” calls as I prepared to leave
