Observation details
Had been scanning holes in snags for most of the hike and just happened to see the white Y and had no idea what that was except that something was in the hole. When I glassed it, was shocked to see a fledgling Saw-whet poking its head out of a nest hole; dark face, yellow eyes but the most obvious feature was the white eyebrows joining a white strip extending to the bill, like a bright white “Y”. It blinked very slowly and then eventually slowly pulled back into the hole. No sign of adults despite scanning nearby trees. Potential first documentation of breeding in the state.
