Observation details
Found by Rachael Friese this morning. Original consensus was that it was a Hybrid based on the amount of white on stomach and rump and a seemingly in-between song. However some later consensus in the day by more people who saw the bird, saw photos, heard audio, and have more expertise on this species suggested much more likely a 1st/2nd year male indigo. The bird was mottled dark blue throughout body with the most blue being on face down to back, with dusky to lighter colored underside with no orangey coloring on body. Had dark wings with no wing bars and double noted call with no buzzy notes which Merlin picked up as Lazuli but that could be a Merlin problem with not recognizing potential rarities. Overall bird had more traits of Indigo than it did of Lazuli, and those odd features could be attributed to being a young bird. Bird was on S side of Butte below the overlook/flagpole area mainly hanging out in tops of the dead trees by the large madrone, was singing almost nonstop, and at one pointed chased a male Lazuli to the N side of the Butte where it stayed for a few minutes.
