Hallelujah!!! the (great gray aside) holy grail owl of Butte County!! very few records!!! I have been pouring over multiple online resources and analyzing all northern California records for the past week in an effort to find the perfect area to search for a Butte County Flam. This is probably about my 30th night searching for this species in the county over the last 2 years. I had fully planned to spend the entire night sunset to sunrise searching, but that ultimately proved unnecessary. We had stopped to play for Flams at 5 or 6 spots, and were on our way back towards Concow as all the side roads we had planned to check were blocked by gates or fallen trees. At our final stop before descending out of the mountains, I heard a very distant low hoot. It was so soft I had a hard time believing that I had heard anything at all. After about a minute I heard the sound again, and then again and again. I alerted Mike, and we kept driving down the road, making attempts to get close enough to hear the owl well. Finally we got close enough for us both to hear it very well, and for me to get a decent recording. We stood there and listened for another 5 minutes, then headed for home. I am now asleep......... Here: 39.847788,-121.480022. First heard around 11:20
