Observation details
**rare; wow Wow WOW!; I was aware of Nial Moores’s record of 1-2 heard singing at Igidae Park 23 May 2021 (ebird.org/checklist/S91382511) but I didn’t really think it would happen for me. As is often the case, it came in a rush of birds: I was watching a Chinese Pond-Heron fly when a Russet Sparrow appeared and while I tried to digiscope that a pitta gave 4 songs from the slopes of the south side, somewhere near Migrant Garden, which I was able to audio record (see first cut below). I focused on the sparrow for a bit, figuring a silent pitta was no harder to find a bit later than immediately. Later I went to where I thought I heard it and fished a bit. It sang from the Boobook Grove East (hereafter Pitta Grove) and I eventually localized the dense, round tree it was singing from but could not spot it. As I inched forward super cautiously it must have seen me and jumped to the next tree behind it, closer to Migrant Garden, as it continued singing from there. As I approached that it flew down the valley—only a fast blur for me. Once I got there though it continued to respond and I got a view of several trees where I thought it might land. And then it did! Photos!
