Observation details
rare in county, but also easily overlooked. was singing persistently from cattails on the west side of the marsh. it was pretty obvious what it was, but LEBI had not been on my radar (although I guess it should have been) and it took me a while to convince myself that this really was what I was hearing. I still wanted visual confirmation, and eventually spotted a male singing very low above the water at the edge of the cattails. faintly audible several times in both of the Merlin recordings. been a long time since I've had such a good look at a LEBI: what a weirdly handsome bird! black above, rich buff on sides of face, wing coverts, and breast. long yellow bill, pale eye, yellow tarsi. what an unexpected treat.
