Observation details
Pretty much a bonkers find earlier today by Connor Cochrane. Only the second county record, and the first in 43 years; a first state record from Bolinas was in 1980! Small mouse-like wren, with a short bill, patterned wing coverts, noticeably striped crown, nape, and back. Plain face lacking distinct supercilium, underparts buffy, moreso at flanks. Structurally, dainty and less portly than HOWR, MAWR or BEWR. Only real confusion in this habitat is possibly with MAWR, but will include how other wren sp. were eliminated for good measure. Cf to House Wren, smaller, less rotund overall with a smaller bill and completely different song. Cf to Marsh Wren, slightly smaller and more attenuated shape, buffy flanks, streaked crown, smaller bill, and neat patterning on the uppers; to the naked eye SEWR more concolor versus the contrasty nature of MAWR plumage. Cf to Bewick’s Wren, shorter tail, lacking distinct white supercilium and habitat/song significantly different. Cf to PAWR, much lighter color, more buff, streaked uppers, very different habitat and song. *CBRC Accepted Record #2023-024
