Observation details
One on trail 1.45 km from research base. Grey head, violet wash to nape/mantle, brown wings, richly coloured chestnut tail, pale underparts. Walking around actively in trail, with rapid bobbing head motion that created the impression of the breast going rapidly from dark to light and then back again with each bob. Photos show a key identification feature of this species -- the richly-coloured chestnut tail, contrasting with dull brown upperparts and wing coverts -- which is not illustrated well or accurately in the Birds of the World nor in most field guides, nor mentioned as an identification feature. Geotrygon montana does not show this contrast between tail and the rest of the upperparts.
