Observation details
**Very scarce resident and the first detected on the island in 62 years of coming here--or even in the surrounding areas on the south side of the lake (Jim and Liz have seen along the mine road). Found earlier today by Jim Berry, and Jessie found it this afternoon foraging at the top of a balsam fir. The bird would grab onto one of the larger branches with its feet, hang down, and quietly grab the bases of spruce needles or buds, twist, and eat them. Flew down to ground at 6:40. Female with rufous underparts and uppertail coverts. Given the behavior earlier (distraction display) and visible brood patch, almost certainly nesting on the island. Lifer for Katelyn and the first Jessie and I have seen in Nipissing. Photos and video.
