Observation details
Fairly surprising, imm flying downriver ph. Identified as Herring based on pale inner primaries, seemingly quite pale mantle, and general impression, but now wondering if it could be a California? California is generally more common upriver but Herrings aren't too rare in the fall. That said I only have one record of a gull during May-June in the USV and that was two imm Californias at Diablo on 5/29/2014 so either species would seem to be notable.
