Media notes
An adult male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher made soft sounds as he repeatedly copulated with an adult female on a power line. The sounds sound like they were vocal, but I must admit they may have been produced by his fluttering wings as he hovered over the female and bounced on her to contact cloacas. Anyway, there are 7 of these sounds space in the 5 to 9 second interval of this recording.
Observation details
I was confused initially because I had found two MALES aggressively fighting near and on the pole that has a lower metal bracket and a wooden upper bracket at this location. I was a bit baffled because I had seen a pair on E. Spann Rd. in previous weeks, and the female had a significantly shorter tail. The males had a heated chase that took them out of sight at 7:21 p.m. when they flew to the tree line south of this location. Within 10 minutes a pair- male and female - returned to the wire, and moments later the 2nd male gave them a parting bombardment shot before turning and returning to the tree line. The amazing thing for me is that the female flew to the pole described above, and her partner flew over her and copulated with her 5-6 times as she sat on the wire. He made strange calls (soft coos) that I had never heard before today. I think that I managed to record the audio. So, given that there was significant aggression between the two males, does the other male have a mate nesting nearby the pair that may be nesting here?
