Observation details
Oriole with all black head, orange breast, white covert edges and wing panels, singing from top of cottonwood when I arrived. No photo because this knucklehead forgot to put the memory card back in his camera last night. Subpar but hopefully discernible audio obtained, competing with the barking prairie dogs nearby and overflying turboprop plane. Unfortunately was not able to relocate after the first discovery. EDIT: I should add that although I recorded this bird with the Merlin app, Merlin did NOT identify this bird. At all. It had no clue. It never detected an oriole of any kind. I didn't expect it to, but I mention this to anyone who reads these that Merlin does not identify birds for you. It makes suggestions, nothing more. Sometimes they're good suggestions, other times, it just has no idea what you're hearing. Use Merlin as a tool, but not as a replacement for your own fabulous brain!
