Observation details

Repeated counts of these flying cigars. 28 initial count by 1s, however at one point a large group was visible above the tree line. Too large a group and too fast to allow for a reasonable count by 1s. Count was 40 when counted by 5s, and seems likely. Took the average of the two numbers here to get 34. Care was taken to be certain no other species were included in the count, which was easy as any swallows present mainly maintained a low elevation over the river while the majority of swifts maintained a higher elevation. Similar of events have occurred here year after year with larger groups of chimney swifts gathering over/around the Winooski River around and during rain events.
