Observation details
This small chickenlike Rail was heard singing and then seen less then 8 feet from our location. Note the barring on the flanks and the thin body of this freshwater marsh nesting species. They will build a floating nest and prefer marshes with cattails and rushes, which are lacking at this location. We first heard this bird, gave a couple of pishes, and then he came right to us! We heard it's repeated "tick-it tick-it" song which was later in the morning from the typical dusk or dawn song. Female's vocalize as well.
