Observation details
Continuing bird. I first spotted it on the lawn between the Sea Glass carousel and State Street; observed here for about 15 minutes, sometimes in the grass, sometimes perched on small tree plantings (marked with orange flags). Additional observations made at very close range at the small garden with the bee hives just west of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. This bird was about the size of a House Sparrow, smaller than nearby European Starlings; it was clearly bigger than an Indigo Bunting. Very thick bill. Overall blue, but this bird was fairly mottled, with a light brown more prevalent on the breast, belly, and back than blue. One wing bar was a strong rufous, the lower wing bar more orange. I was able to take some photographs through my binoculars with a mobile device, and I included the best one.
