Media notes
This is a recording made at 10:43 PM. The recording is about 6 minutes long. Within the first 2 minutes there are about four series of calls consisting of 6-9 notes covering frequency range from 2 to 6+ khz that sounds like the male alarm call at Cornell's "All About Birds" website. Listen for these at 14, 37, 51, 1:50 and 2:31. We were sitting quietly, in the open, facing the box, about 25 feet away. These sounds first came from behind us and to the right and later in front of us and to the right. At about 1:45, there is a loud notification ping from my cell phone. At 1:42 begins single, soft call notes that are best heard at 2:25-2:26. It was difficult to tell where these were coming from, but they seemed more or less to be in front of us. The sonogram shows that the sound structure is very close to the first call note in the series described above. At about 3:35 there is a prolonged series of rather soft tooting calls coming from across the coulee to our left where we know a fledgling was located. The last minute or so can be disregarded, as it has mostly foot shuffling sounds. There was enough moonlight that we felt sure we would see an adult go to the box if that occurred. It could be that the adult made the food delivery to the fledgling across the coulee to our left.
Observation details
As reported earlier to e-bird, a family of Northern Saw-whet Owls are being raised in our back yard in a wood duck box at the edge of the coulee. Yesterday we knew with certainty from a nest box check that two young remained in the box. A fledgling was found in late afternoon across the coulee. That leaves one of the young unaccounted for. For two hours after 10 pm we sat quietly listening for sounds and made this one recording.
