Observation details
Small, dark-mantled gull with a solid black hood, reddish black drooping bill, reddish black legs, and white eye arcs. Practically no white on the primary tips, which were long. Faint brown tinge in the wing coverts, indicating a young alternate-plumaged bird, i.e. 3rd cycle. The hood was somewhat high on the nape and the eye arcs were relatively thick (suggesting Franklin's) but the couple times the bird opened its wings, it distinctly showed extensive black in the outer underwings. Last year a 2nd cycle LAGU oversummered on this pier--an interesting coincidence, if not the same bird. *Edit: After reviewing photos, it seems the coverts could just be worn on this bird rather than brown-tinged, so potentially older than 3rd cycle?
