Observation details

Noticeably slimmer and more elongate than White Rumped with straighter slimmer bill. (Bill very thin and black even to base). Wingtips longer than tail. Black legs. Wing tips crossed in back in additional photos not included. No streaking on sides. Seems to have buffy breastband. Position of the inflection point on the upper back seems to match the shape in the Sibley p 185 comparison. Had to sort through many White Rumps to find this one after well over an hour of study with scope. It is very tricky because some of the WR are not showing noticeable streaks on sides and could easily pass for Baird's without a photo. Almost all of the calidris on the farm are white rumped today. This is slightly smaller than the WR that were around...shorter legs. I have very little experience with this species, so put the photos in an id help group. Support for Baird's from the id help group: "The bird seems to lack a strong superciliary, particularly behind the eye, and does not have a strong black lore, so the head looks more Bairds-like. The large solid dark scaps, secondary coverts, and back feathers better fit Baird. Bill seems straight to me, also more Bairds-like. Finally, the flanks look unstreaked, which is a characteristic of Baird's. White-rump, in alternate plumage, have obvious streaking along the flanks."
