Observation details
Gray head; pale throat framed by gray malar stripes. Narrow, smudgy brownish collar on upper breast, with short indistinct streaks below that. Underside showed a light rufous wash. Back chestnut brown, with pale rufous edging on the wings. More rufous on the wing tips and tail; rump even more rufous than that. Bill dark, looked like it had a pale base, but not that obvious in the field. Eyes dark, with white arcs behind the eye. Actively fly catching in open forest, at times quite close. I got a couple decent photos and a short video clip taken with an iPhone through my binoculars. In fact, I would have missed this bird entirely if a couple of the local boys had not pointed it out to me, sitting in the shadows. I lifted my binoculars, expecting an Asian Brown Flycatcher, but was immediately struck by the rufous tones and contrasting gray head. Life bird.
