Observation details
Known summer location for this species in recent years. First one initially at about 33.100494, -116.481179, in the closer mesquites (photos left and center below), then retreating to the distant cottonwoods. Fairly large and more colorful (brighter yellow on belly) than the average ATFL; rufous on tail extending to the tip (seen in photo capturing a launch into flight); bill not particularly large but stout at base. Bird was initially giving a series of fairly rapid burry chirps (first audio clip; see also https://xeno-canto.org/123157 and https://xeno-canto.org/123509 for other examples of this call); this bird eventually transitioned to a series of typical “whit” calls (as per below). The second bird was near the eastern end of the route (at about 33.100166, -116.476084) and was mainly heard, seen only briefly in the distant, tall cottonwoods (photo on right); also a relatively colorful Myiarchus flycatcher with a fairly stout bill; did not see its undertail. This second bird frequently gave a series of typical whit calls (second audio clip), essentially indistinguishable from those of the first bird.
