Observation details
Detected singing bird that also gave several of the characteristic zeer calls (recording below); observed perched very briefly where the extensive yellow coloration on the bill was evident, appeared to be of a smaller size than gray-cheeked and had a more plump shape; favored an area of dense undergrowth near a fruiting strangler fig, possibly feeding on fruit of this tree; very secretive and difficult to detect as is characteristic for this rare species; recent easterly winds were favorable for this species migratory path from the Dominican Republic and the second week in May seems to be the period when most detections occur in Florida.
