Observation details
*Found a pair with 3 fledglings - which felt pretty early. I watched an American Red Squirrel cross the trail, and then caused a loud commotion. Both parents loudly scolded the squirrel, and swooped at it. At the same time I saw one fledgling flush out into the top of a bush. The parents eventually chased the squirrel away, and I was able to see two more fledglings. They were able to fly short distances, as well as cling to tree bark. The fledglings were very wary of my presence, but the parents didn't pay me any attention at all. Per Birds of the World, Carolina Wren incubation is typically 15 days, and fledging on day 9. 1 egg laid per day. With this in mind, the first egg was laid no later than 4/11. BotW also lists the egg laying dates for PA (nearest state listed) as 4/8 - 7/22, though that data is from 1948... Needless to say the timeframe has moved up in the last 75 years.
