Gray Flycatcher showing pale lower mandible
Observation details
continuing bird found on 5 May was in the small grove of trees adjacent to the second parking lot on the right after entering the park from Madonna Road. It was flycatching from perches. After landing it dipped its tail down and then flicked it back up (see video). This was a long billed Empidonax with a low profile crown, a messy eyering and pale lores, two white wingbars, and a long tail. The colors were paler than the Pacific-slope Flycatcher I saw afterward and the only yellowish tones were on the belly. The breast was vested and the throat appeared white. The lower mandible appeared to be a pale yellowish-orange with a dark tip and he upper mandible was all dark. (Photos and short video showing tail motion)
