Observation details
cool! stopped at a big old clearcut john wanted to check out; turned out to be a vast cutover bog, flanked by dense softwood stands. Avg. height of standing trees ~2m; wet sphagnum mat with cottongrass and sheep laurel the understory. One of those peculiar instances where I stepped out of the truck and mused aloud that it would be an interesting place to have a LISP. Sure enough, in 5 min an interesting song came from back near the road that sounded best for this sp. Located it in a little patch of spruces near a slash pile, recorded the song and got stunning looks all round. John had played a couple songs on his phone to confirm the ID and the bird responded animatedly to the playback, flying in close and going into strong song bouts. I generally avoid playback unless actively studying song response behavior, but what we observed was consistent at least with a singing male on territory if not T. Michael had a second singer—both within block bounds
