Observation details
I have trudged through mucky, tick-infested marshes looking for these with very little success, and here was one perched in full view like a lawn ornament. Easily observed with all field marks plainly evident, its only response to people and dogs passing by was to point its bill upward and crane its neck a bit more. Someone needs to tell this guy that works a lot better in heavy marsh vegetation than on a newly mowed lawn! I wish the photos were a little better but I was limited to the cell phone and didn't want to betray the bird's trust (or force it to expend valuable energy) by approaching any closer. I just wanted to illustrate how exposed this bird was. Perhaps I should have been searching neatly manicured lawns for them all along.
