Media notes
This photo was taken at long distance in horrid lighting conditions with a point-and-shoot camera taxed to its amx.
Observation details
Plump birds with sewing machine motion feeding. Longish bills. Originally thought these birds were Short-billed Dowitchers, but after some careful consideration, I am listing these as this species. The reasons: I observed that the undertail was noticeably whitish compared to their rufous bellies. The SBDO should show consistent orange from belly through the tail region; Time of year: This species is much more likely to show up now, than SBDO would (this is and of itself would not make or break the ID, but a state eBird editor pointed this out to me.) I am so primed that the default dowitcher is SBDO, that this species originally was not on my radar; it has always been a "shorebird Fall" migrant to me. Also, it has a "hunched back" appearance, a trait pointed out to me by the eBird editor.
