Observation details
Light morph. Being harassed by Common Raven. Raven's call got my attention, then I heard BWHA call that I did not recognize. I thought that call was just a strange vocalization from the raven. They were flying low & totally obscured in the treetops, then came into view, and I saw there were 2 birds. Lack of dark patagials got my attention (i.e. not a Red-tailed Hawk), along with broad appearance & lack of double bulge in trailing edge of wing. No further calls heard. Tail bands made me confident this was something different. I could even see the forward white tail band. Strong gusting wind and trees made getting it into view and getting camera on it a challenge. I sent phone photo of camera's LCD image to eBird reviewer friend with my thought that it looked like a BWHA. He agreed. Poor image quality due to old DSLR. Cropped, but otherwise unaltered photos. Rare in Yakima County, and I found only one photo documented sighting on eBird in eastern Washington State before, by Lamont McLachlan: ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S26009888 Not reported here on eBird in the spring previously. This is a life bird for me. I'm psyched! I'll upload more photos.
