Observation details
A little surprising, not often reported in Dona Ana county. Small, dark, and compact phalaropes with shorter and thicker bills than Wilson's Phalarope (did not taper to a fine point like a WIPH). Shorter, thicker necks than Wilson's. Dark gray upperparts and breast, white underparts. Crown blackish and neck a dark, rich brick color. White throat contrasting sharply. In flight the white stripe on either wing was clearly visible. Certainly the cutest phalaropes!
