Media notes
An adult Bald Eagle photographed in flight by Curtis A. Marantz on 19 April 2023 at the Palo Verde Ecological Reserve, Riverside County, California. This was one of two eagles seen around the site today.
Observation details
We saw what appeared to be an adult eagle in flight along the north end of the woodland plots that disappeared over the trees to the south, and then some time later, what appeared to be this same bird briefly when it flew over a road within the woodland. Waggoner photographed a second eagle that showed signs of immaturity, including some duskiness in the head and tail, but I missed this bird. The bird that I saw was a conspicuously large raptor with wings that were broad throughout and with rounded to fingered tips, a moderate projection of the head and neck before the leading edges of the wings, and a medium-length tail. The body and wings were dark, and apparently brown, but at least when seen from a distance, the head and tail appeared to be entirely white. I have some recollection of seeing a large, yellow bill, but it would be best to check my photos to confirm this, and for any additional details that I missed in the field.
