Female begging whinny
Observation details
Male out of roost when I arrived. Female giving begging whinny call from her latest cavity, closer to the male roost, approximately 40' away, with the hole facing north. Starlings are using another hole approximately eight feet above the owl. The first hole was maybe 100' from the male's roost and faced east. Male left the area and didn't return for nearly two hours. Female left cavity and begged from the favored copulation perch for nearly an hour. She was facing an open space in anticipation of him appearing from trees on the other side of an open area. She went quiet for about twenty minutes. Occasionally whinnied for another twenty minutes. Male finally appeared about 10:15. They interacted vocally, he came to be next to her, they touched bills (I didn't see any prey being transferred), he moved about a foot away, he sang, she begged and then he mounted her and they copulated. This interaction was recorded using Merlin Sound ID. He flew to a separate tree, she followed, and then I lost track of the male. I left while she was begging. I'm still wondering when she will start incubating, but she still appears to spend most of the evening away from her two cavities she has used.
