Observation details
1 bird observed below the diversion dam, all others upstream. The first bird was along the stream in reach #4, in an area without dense shrubs. It seemed to be using streamside grasses for cover. It perched in the open for several seconds on a log across the creek. The other 3 were using dense, shrubby cover: 1 was in a line of Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) bushes ca 15-20 m north of the stream channel; 1 flushed from snowberry (Symphoricarpos sp.) and flew to the ground under alders along the creek; and 1 was along the stream edge. I got excellent views (and some pictures) of this latter bird. I observed it foraging for ca 2 minutes, apparently picking arthropods or other small prey out from a low, muddy, grass-covered bank (area roughly 3 m^2) inside a bend of the creek, near dense shrubby growth including Cornus sericea, Alnus sp., Ribes sp., and shrubby Salix sp., with some tangles of Clematis ligusticifolia. During this time, it flew once across the creek from the foraging area to a shrub, where it was partly concealed; it then flew back down and foraged some more before flying up into other shrubs, at which point I lost sight of it. I got satisfactory views of all these birds. Identifying characteristics included fine streaking on back; fine streaking on breast and flanks; lined face pattern similar to SOSP, with buffy malar; nervous behavior; white eyering; buffy breast; and harsh, high, buzzy "zeet" calls (only one bird was vocal).
