single call from the Willet at 3 seconds. This call matches much better to the western Willet calls than to the eastern Willet calls (comparison to audio from allaboutbirds.org)
Observation details
And if the avocets weren't enough, there was one Willet in the mix! see photos. also seen by some other birders. This was likely a western subspecies bird. Its wings were very pale for a Willet (see the in-flight picture), and it spent much of its time up to its belly in the water (see the 3rd picture). See notes regarding these two characteristics of western Willets in Sibley Birds East. Additionally, it showed up with a flock of American Avocets, which breed west of the Mississippi.
