Media notes
Portion of flock of 2500+ blackbirds, at least 2100 of which were Tricoloreds.
Observation details
Flock of at least 2500 blackbirds on south side of Stateline Rd where Straits Drain Rd meets it. To our shock, the vast majority were Tricoloreds. We scoped them quite a while, getting repeated views of all the birds while walking and flying. Male Trikes showed bright white wing patches paired with (when visible) red patches of a darker hue than the Redwings in the flock. This is a known spot for Trikes, but we were not prepared for these numbers. We hypothesize that the birds were staging at dusk before going to roost, such that all birds from the surrounding areas were here at once. Later we noted that Kevin Spencer had had 2000 Trikes at Straits Drain just a few days earlier. We obtained photos and video; I have uploaded mine but Frank may have better video to add.
