Media notes
Portion of a flock of 200-plus Pinyon Jays flying repeatedly between trees and ground in open Ponderosa Pine-Sagebrush woodland. I count roughly 164 birds visible in this photo.
Observation details
A huge flock was meandering through the pines, alternately flying to the ground to feed and then back up to the trees. A wonderful spectacle, and the highest number of this species I’ve ever seen. We each counted by 10s, 5s, and 1s several times, and came up with roughly 210 birds. Photos and video show portions of the flock and give a suggestion of what the experience was like.
